So Long Summer...Good Riddance!

Well, it’s that time of year, again. Summer is coming to an end. Say goodbye to hot days and sweltering nights. Only a few more weeks of spending your time off lounging by the pool and the nights sipping cocktails in the back yard (well, maybe scratch that second one-cocktails are good all year round). While it’s sad in a way, I’m also slightly excited for the change of season. I love the fall. As soon as we start getting those first few days in September when the weather cools off a bit and a breeze blows in, I just feel good. Summer is great. But the fall, I don’t know, there’s just something about it: The changing of the leaves, the crisp smell in the air, trading weekends by the pool for days off spent hiking or working in the yard, its just different. Change is good, for all you summer-lovers. Sure, those four months are some of the best of the year, but a little variety never hurt anyone. And, I don’t know about the rest of you, but the fall and spring seasons are some of my absolute favorite when it comes to fashion, and decorating too!
The weather is perfect for creating the greatest outfits ever. The thing is, in the summer, it’s just so damn hot all the time that you hardly want to wear anything at all. You’re lucky if you find me in anything more than a bathing suit half of the time, or just a light and airy dress with flip-flops. But the fall and spring, well it’s just the most ideal time of year for fashion, in my opinion. The sun is still out and the days are still slightly warm, the nights are breezy and cool, but not freezing. It’s the best time to take out the bikes (bicycles or motorcycles), it’s great for walking the dogs and instead of a cold drink I like to sip on a nice cup of tea or hot coffee or apple cider-I’m definitely a fall/spring kind of girl.
I just went shopping; thought I’d hit the end-of-season sales. Well, turns out I missed that boat. Most of the summer wear was already gone, either sold or taken off the floor to make room for the latest in fall fashion. So, I figured I’d just get a jump start on beefing up my sweater collection! I really didn’t go to many stores, like most, I’m a bit strapped for cash, but I did manage to hit just a few good yet inexpensive ones like Forever 21, H&M and Target.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed in my findings. There really wasn’t much that caught my eye and so, needless to say, I didn’t buy very many things at all. However, I still came across a select few things that I had to have. My tastes in fashion seem to change every now and then, but there’s always been a solid foundation to build upon of just wanting comfortable, everyday, functional fashion. So, at Forever 21 I got just a basic necessity, the sheer black blouse, something every girl needs in their closet-that and a great black and grey striped cardigan. To me, the perfect fall outfit is simple, a good fitting jean, a tank with a cardigan (preferably a longer one), and simple shoes whether you’re like me and you wear flip flops until the first snowfall, or you prefer a cute ballet flat or something like it, either way, that pretty much sums it up. I’m partial to hats (fedoras, or as I like to call them, old man hats) and I love big comfy scarves.
You can see that I’m not reinventing the wheel here when it comes to fashion, because as I grow older I realize more and more that simplicity is best. Less is more: Live by it! There’s no need to get all dolled-up for an average day of running errands or going to work (depending on your job-we’re pretty relaxed here at the AQ), but hey, that’s just me. I’m also a true and firm believer of just doing what’s right for you. So, if you’d rather wear tights and heels and skirts every day for the rest of your life, be my guest, fashion is, after all, about expression!
The fall/winter home décor is something I look forward to, as well. The smells in the stores from all of the warm-scented candles are so delicious. I happen to be partial to anything slightly resembling pumpkin, pecan and cinnamon! With one chunky candle, you can make the whole house smell good, and top that off with the lingering sweet odor of freshly baked cookies and you’re set!
I love draping warm fuzzy throw blankets on the bed and the couch, and I love using earth-toned colors everywhere like deep browns, reds, oranges, golds, etc. This is exciting for me because it’s the first time that I have my own place to do all of this too. Granted I still haven’t gotten curtains on my windows, so I should probably do that first before I go out and get all new seasoned decorations, but I’m just so looking forward to this. I get bored pretty easily, I’ve always been that way, and it seems that, to me, the change of season always comes just in the nick of time; the chance to move things around and switch things up a little is a constant in my life, and so four chances a year to do that, well, that’s just what someone like me needs!
The other thing that I really love about the fall season is being outside: As much as possible. I don’t even necessarily need to be doing anything at all. It’s just that, as I’ve already said a million times, the weather is so perfect. My neighbors and I have set up a nice little area in the back of our building for barbeques and the like, and so I think that for the coming change of weather, we’re going to look into two new additions to the place. First of all, we were talking about getting a gazebo. It’s just nice to be able to kind of close your self off from the bugs and whatnot, and then inside, we’re planning on getting a little fire pit to sit around and sip on some Brandy-that should certainly warm us up, you know, just in case the fire goes out!
So bring on the chill, I say! Fall is upon us and I couldn’t be happier. Pack away your swim suits and reorganize your closet, redecorate your house and get outside! This is the absolute most beautiful and perfect time of year!
