Sex, The City, And The Fashion!

May 30, 2008 – the opening day for Sex And The City: The Movie to hit theatres everywhere! This couldn’t possibly make me happier! Like many women, I’ve been a long time fan of the show, not only for its outside-of-the-box approach to making the single life more socially acceptable and being promiscuous not such a bad thing, but more a right of passage for women, but also for the fashion! Oh the fashion! The clothes in the series are a character all their own – there’s Carrie, the sex columnist obsessed with her Manolo Blahniks, Samantha, the vixen who’s not afraid to say, do and wear what she wants, Charlotte, who reminds us all of what it’s like to be a lady and of course Miranda, the power-lunching lawyer by day turned into the sultry redhead single gal by night. I love it! Each Manhattan-bred beauty has a style of her own, creating a great eclectic array of fashion and personality, and surely the movie should thrust all of that upon us on a much bigger scale.
Though they may not have thought this phenomenon possible at first, these ladies, the new “Fab Four,” have taken over the world of couture and are constantly setting trends on set and off. Every young girl wants to be Carrie; she’s carefree, adorable and, I think, the most relatable to the average run-of-mill consumer - she’s not rich, she’s not unrealistically gorgeous, yet she captures the hearts of America with her high pitched squeals of excitement and her ruthless addiction to fashion. She’s a girl that won’t make the rent that month because she spent her savings on the latest pair of experimental shoe designs buy her new favorite designer of the week – and I love her for it! Off camera, though, the woman who brings Carrie to life in a way that no one else can, Sarah Jessica Parker, seems to be a bit more laid back in terms of her fashion choices. We often see the NYC dweller trotting about the streets in a casual pair of jeans and a t-shirt with cutesy flats, and hardly without her favorite accessory of all, her son James Wilkie, by her side. Parker recently made her iconic style accessible to the general public with the debut of her new, affordable line called Bitten. You can check out her designs at bittensjp.com or exclusively at Steve and Barry’s locations throughout the area.
Her on screen gal pal Samantha is a force to be reckoned with. She has single handedly changed peoples’ views of what it really means to be an unwed forty-something woman out on the prowl. Why, not too long ago the acts that she commits on the show were shunned, thought of as sinful and certainly not spoken of aloud. But now there are newly empowered women throughout the world standing up for their rights as sexual beings, and best of all, doing things they’ve always wanted to but may not have had the guts in the past. And her sense of fashion? To die for! Samantha is the type that can pull off any look; she easily transitions from a day time diva in the PR world to a flirty and ferociously confident temptress in the evening. She looks equally as stunning in a form fitting power suit as she does in a strapless little black dress or, as we’ve seen time and time again, in nothing at all!
The good girl of the group (or so it seems), Charlotte, keeps things a bit more covered up then the rest of the gals, but she still manages to make a grand entrance into every room she walks. Though she may be representing on the little, and now big (!) screen, for all of you girls-next-door, she still maintains an up-to-date and desirable wardrobe. The only thing that differs about Charlotte from the others is that she opts for conservative cardigans and grandma’s pearls rather than a barely-there vintage Dior mini dress. Don’t be fooled by her outside appearance, though, because Charlotte is certainly not as innocent as she may lead you to believe. She engages in just as much sexual forwardness as the rest of her troupe, she just doesn’t talk about it as much!
Last, but certainly not least, we have Miranda, the striking, fiery hot redhead who, similar to Samantha, plays the role of doting mother and powerful lawyer during the day only to turn into a girl’s girl at night, hitting the streets of New York City in her high heels and classically revealing attire, just with a little less sexual adventure (well, a lot less now that she’s married to Steve). She embodies a little bit of all the girls, in my opinion. She’s got that powerful diva vibe when she needs to strike a deal at work, she’s got a slightly conservative side to her that embraces her in Charlotte’s world, and she’s got that flighty, free spirit airiness about her as does Carrie, her long time confidant.
Sex And The City, the series and now the movie, has catapulted these women to the forefront of the fashion world. They continuously grace the pages of the hottest fashion magazines, they’re always sighted seeking out the latest trends front and center at the runway shows for some of the most respected designers – they are this generations fashion icons! I can’t wait to see the movie, which is in theatres now, but I plan on waiting at least a few days for the buzz to die down so I can get a seat! I promise to be back with a full report of (hopefully) my satisfaction or (hopefully not!) my disdain. Either way, whether or not there’s a happy ending, there’s sure to be some out-of-this-world fashion, and that alone makes it worth the trip and the sticky floors if you ask me!
